ABOUT THE RESIDENCY
The .abeceda [New Music Academy] supports composers for whom notation is a compositional and performative system, valued for its specificity rather than its novelty: a means of organising sound, time, action, interaction, and interpretation in performance.
Each selected composer develops one work for one formation: solo, string quartet, chamber ensemble, symphony orchestra, or choir. Online sessions examine how graphic, proportional, open-form, rule-based, animated, digital, or hybrid approaches organise information. Rehearsal tests how legibility, precision, productive ambiguity, and performer agency shape time, action, interpretation, and sound within concrete performance.
Stage I establishes the project’s artistic, notational, instrumental, and practical foundations. In rehearsals, scores and systems are tested in sound; materials, rules, interfaces, methods, form, and interpretation are examined, revised, and realised through collaboration with performers.
