ABOUT THE RESIDENCY

 

The .abeceda [New Music Academy] programme invites composers to develop new works through engagement with existing repertoire. Reference works serve neither as templates nor authorities, but as historically situated partners in analysis, questioning, and compositional discovery.

 

Each composer identifies one work, corpus, or repertoire lineage as a point of departure, then creates an autonomous composition for one formation: solo, string quartet, chamber ensemble, symphony orchestra, or choir. Close reading and listening reveal materials, structures, techniques, histories, and assumptions that may be resisted, displaced, translated, or reimagined in sound.

 

Through composition, analysis, rehearsal, reflection, and public presentation, the programme develops critical, transformative methods beyond imitation, quotation, or pastiche. Each composer leaves with a premiered work, professional documentation, a renewed relation to repertoire, and collaborative relationships.
