ABOUT THE RESIDENCY

 

The .abeceda [New Music Academy] programme invites composers to treat infrastructure and cognition as compositional operations. Infrastructure concerns protocols, dependencies, flows, resources, access, maintenance, and constraints; cognition concerns situated attention, perception, working memory, anticipation, and decision-making.

 

Each composer designs one musical system for one formation: solo, string quartet, chamber ensemble, symphony orchestra, or choir. Exchange examines how notation distributes information, action, and responsibility; how form directs attention and memory; and how ensemble relations organise coordination and choice. Rehearsal reveals how systems shape action, adapt, or fail in performance.

 

Through composition, analysis, rehearsal, reflection, and public presentation, composers develop works that organise action and listening rather than illustrate systems or mental states. Each composer leaves with a premiere, professional documentation, refined methods, and collaborative relationships.
